I have always wanted to go beyond the conventional etching which gives you a black and white result, you have to depend on lines or cross hatch or pointillism to achieve a gradual blend of tonal values when viewed from afar but is lost at a close range.
This visual trick is what I set out to defeat when I started experimenting with wood.I wanted to produce art which would have the old photograph sepia tone look. I tried different grades of wood before settling with the processed medium density fiberboard.- MDF.
My materials are the fiberboard, a pencil, a blow torch - to burn the surface at different heat ranges, a Dremel motor tool, sanders, polishers and Acto blades . The result is what you see displayed
I pay great attention to detail, light and shade, these enable me to achieve the subtlety that you see on the skin tones and drapery.
